Lord of Mictlan

Mictlan is not hell. It is the land of the dead, nine levels down, a long walk with a dog for a guide. Mictlantecuhtli and his partner Mictecacihuatl keep the bones. When Quetzalcoatl came for them to make a new people, the death lord set traps. The bones were dropped and broken — which is why human bodies are of mixed sizes. He is painted as a skeletal king because that is what remains.
