Ixchel is the Maya moon, sometimes a young weaver, sometimes an old midwife with a jar of water. On Cozumel her shrine drew pilgrims; midwives invoked her in labor. She can pour healing or a flood. Jaguar spots mark her cloak in the Madrid and Dresden codices. She is not a Mexica goddess transplanted — she is Yucatec and highland Maya, older in those books than Tenochtitlan.
