The truth of the count

Rise and fall

We are native to this land. Not visitors. Not a costume. Mexica, Maya, Olmec, Toltec — Mesoamerican nations. The fall was a war and a plague, not a vanishing.

The eagle on the nopal
The founding sign. The city on the water. That is the rise.

The rise

1325 — Mexico-Tenochtitlan on the lake, at the eagle on the nopal. 1428 — Triple Alliance with Texcoco and Tlacopan. Tribute cloth, cacao, quetzal feathers, warriors of the eagle and jaguar houses. Templo Mayor raised in layers. Amanteca working feather mosaics. Calmecac for the nobles, telpochcalli for the youth. Nahuatl as the tongue of the valley.

They learned from older cities: Olmec heads and maize, Maya numbers and the 260-day count, Teotihuacan as the place the gods were made, Tollan as the model of a city. That is inheritance, not emptiness.

The fall

1519 — Cortés on the coast. Motecuhzoma Xocoyotzin, ninth tlatoani, received him in Tenochtitlan and was then held in his own palace. His full lesson is Motecuhzoma Xocoyotzin. 1520 — the massacre in the sacred patio, the king’s death (stoned in the Spanish letter, killed by the Spanish in native counts), smallpox in the valley, Cuitláhuac dead of it. 13 August 1521 (1 Coatl, year 3 Calli) — Cuauhtémoc’s Tenochtitlan falls after a siege that starved the island. Allies of Tlaxcala and others fought beside the Spaniards. That is the truth: native nations on both sides of that war, and a European empire that then claimed the valley.

Books were burned. Temples were pulled for churches. People were not erased. Nahuatl is still spoken. Maya languages are still spoken. The tonalpohualli still names the day. We are not “gone.”

We are native

Native means from here. Mexica, Maya, Mixtec, Zapotec, Huastec, Purepecha, and the rest of this land. Chicano and Mexican descendants carry that count whether a government writes it down or not. This house does not ask permission to say Mexica. The word is the people of Mexi. The eagle is still the highland golden eagle of Mexico. The jaguar is still the night knight.
